Being so isolated from the rest of the show business world has fostered a deep trust among the cast. Like so many independent American films before it, the show makes the best use it can of out-of-the way locations, tipping past a Hollywood version of America in pursuit of the real thing.
In its own way, finding Griffin was as important as the empathy McKinnon and his cast bring to the series. Can a TV show as little-watched as Rectify is make the world a better place? In season one, Teddy was an easy character to dislike, the peacock who strutted when Daniel seemed almost too sensitive to live. But after Daniel knocked Teddy out and shoved coffee grounds into his butt, Rectify insisted on making you see the character, over and over again, as human, hurting, vulnerable.
And the beauty of Rectify is encapsulated in an idea McKinnon expresses to me: Over its four seasons, the show will have followed these characters for about six months of their lives.
But, he adds, putting these characters under the microscope was central to what made the series powerful: "I never wanted to jump too far ahead and miss those little steps, those possible transformations or regressions that we do as human beings. As a result, being part of Rectify is not an experience the cast will be able to shake very easily. They contain passages of stark beauty, and moments of dreamlike simplicity.
Which brings me back to Aden Young, and the character living in a guesthouse in his head, and how he might let go. This summer, when I sat down to chat with him at a Rectify press event held after filming concluded, we discussed how he and Daniel would finally part ways.

In recent times TV channels have been spewing out shows after shows but without any class.
Sundance has come up with Rectify which defies all the current trends. Rectify is not a show which is recommended for people who like fast paced storyline and actions. Rectify has a slow narration. It allows room for the characters to feel the feelings and act without saying words.
The direction is beautiful. The background music is the life of the show. It has been beautifully crafted to capture and express every emotion the lead is feeling. Some of the dialogues feel straight out of a novel. Rectify is TV at its best. This was seen most recently in a season-four episode where Daniel demanded that a fellow inmate in a halfway house stop masturbating in front of him and seemed ready to kill him if he refused, although the coffee-grounds incident in season two was the most disturbing.
But eventually it became clear that this was a response to the brutality Daniel saw and suffered in prison including repeated rapes rather than anything innate to his character. Daniel always was a searcher and a storyteller, and we could see this in his awed and fascinated response to art in season four — incarnated by his pregnant Nashville girlfriend Chloe Caitlin FitzGerald , who came perilously close to the redemptive Manic Pixie Dreamgirl stereotype but thankfully never quite crossed over.
The windows have mosaic-stained glass patterns, suggesting a church accessorized by a mid-twentieth-century modern artist like Piet Mondrian. But there were points when Tawney became a sort of second lead — especially in season four, which saw her bonding with the elderly, sick resident of a nursing home. She was so devastated by losing him that she vowed to join Doctors Without Borders and minister to the afflicted in other countries, like a missionary whose goal is to comfort rather than convert.
Even when it confronted upsetting subject matter head-on, it did it with compassion, curiosity about experience, and an abiding belief in the potential to transcend suffering, or at least get through the bad times. Already a subscriber?
