The challenge for the Antara has been to make it manifestly different from its cousin, not just in the way it looks but also in how it feels to drive. GM in the UK is attempting to position the two ranges differently in the market, leading to the unlikely outcome that the Antara is aimed at older, more affluent buyers seeking something sporty and a bit upmarket, while the Captiva is aimed at young family buyers even though Chevrolet is historically a brand aimed at older blue-collar types.
This final version doesn't have the squat stance and extravagant front-wing air-vents of the GTC — the latter are there, but in toned-down form and with no practical purpose — but it still looks, in my view, leaner, cleaner and less bloated than its rivals. The SE has nasty, shiny, fake wood trim, too, the sort of thing they love in Korea. But it isn't meant to be a Korean car. School-run mums aren't going to enjoy this. Part of that accelerator stodginess is to do with the time the turbocharger takes to deliver meaningful boost, and this engine is definitely not as good here as its better diesel rivals. But now I'm out on the open road, and things are looking up. The driving position is good and commanding, as an SUV's should be, and once the engine is stoked up it proves properly muscular with the easy overtaking ability that is a diesel's forte.
