From the controls of a tiny laptop, a performer now has the power to mix, change and loop sounds in a concert setting with great ease. This modern twist of technology is bringing a new level of music to the electronic dance party. While the genre of live electronica is relatively new on the music circuit, nobody is breaking the boundaries of live producing and improvisation like EOTO.
Fusing elements of live instrumentation, house music, dubstep and electro into their dance ready sound, the band will be taking the country by storm beginning in late September for their perennial fall tour, performing 33 consecutive nights in a row.
Consisting of Michael Travis and Jason Hann the duo mixes the organic sounds of live drums, bass and guitar through a variety of programs and gadgets to create a style of music that is more likely found in a dance club, then a live music theater.
What sets EOTO apart from other artists in this emerging genre is how the music is created. A trait that has fans old and new catching multiple shows on a tour and packing venues wherever they play.
Or maybe EOTO is selling out venues around the coast for the spirit of dance music they bring in general. It should come as no surprise that the members of EOTO have performed with a range of musicians second to none. Every one wishing to enter the festival will need their own pass. Which is so hard to do with a regular band. We know when we hit a style, we like to hang there for around ten minutes or so before we switch to something else.
We knew that they could draw a crowd, and a lot of people got what they were doing on stage. We liked them and their sound, especially when Zach Velmer played more drum n bass stuff; I listened to them quite a bit. Tipper was a huge influence in the beginning, as was Bassnectar when he was doing a lot of breakbeat stuff.
Whenever we run into one another we are always asking each other how the fuck we do what we do! Well as far as bass music goes, I prefer to call it bass music because it encompasses everything. It seems like today people are quick to call types of music dubstep when it clearly might be something else. I guess people work with what they know. I think that underground bass music separates itself from what is going on in the rest of the world. So much of electronic music in the mainstream seems like DJ Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold and Carl Cox, which is such a fist-pumping douchey scene in my opinion.
It feels like underground bass music is coming from someplace else. It has its own style within the States too. The whole night people feel it when they are swimming in bass music, whatever the genre, drum n bass, downtempo, glitch hop, or dubstep. The important thing is that the bass is always present. Oh man! That might be the best sounding PA in the world! JH: Ummm, Shambhala! Number 1! Every year! Everyone brings their A-game and their new material. There are other festivals too, but whatever [laughs].
What an outstanding show you guys put on! JH: At the Village? JH: Ohhhh yeah. On one of our tours when we got a new computer… We always have to get the latest computer out because we load it up with so much content that the CPU will overload, cut out on us, or make really weird sounds for no reason.
So every time a faster computer comes out we usually invest in it so we can do even more with it. Every night of that tour, which was like 50 shows, our computer would crash 3 times a night. So I was left drumming while the computer rebooted.
So many people thought it was just some new thing we were doing and sometimes the crowd would get super amped up when everything but the drums cut out.
I would have to try so hard with my small kit to keep something going. It would happen so regularly that we would have to make it part of the show. Almost every night we have something happen on stage, but there are degrees of fatality. There are things that we can handle if they pop up. Any looping mistakes, or other hiccups can get worked into a routine until the arrangement creates a working song. We can transition into a new song or make stuff fit together on the fly. For instance, we played in Key West Florida at the Green Parrot, a place that fits around roughly around people.
They had these huge wood windows that they would leave open during the show, which almost made it feel like an outdoor club. It was such a unique atmosphere! Also, Arcata California. All these smaller towns man. There are so many unique places to play that I could make a list. He would play a lot of Caribbean music during the day and early hours, with international musicians sitting in. So that was my exposure to early international music. And he would have band members join him for his rock stuff, which was more Police stuff, Crosby Stills and Nash, and Rolling Stones and that kind of thing.
Those are the bands I wanted to go see. This band House of Freaks, which was this amazing duo of guitars and drums that would put the White Stripes to shame, really, put most bands to shame. I think the campus club was called The Backdoor, and there was just always good stuff going on there. GW: Fishbone, I love those guys. I got to catch a few of their shows this summer on the west coast. Holy crap.
And then I fan boyed him for a little bit. JH: There are definitely times. Like whenever we go to DC. Another group I liked was Bad Brains. GW: I really like those parts of the show where you start saying things like that. The last time I caught you guys at the Fillmore in Denver there were some aspects of that too. GW: How did you get that going?
I used to loop my voice a little bit more but then I got this harmonizer that I use live that can harmonize my voice. I can just hit a button and all of the sudden there are two other people singing in harmony with me. And I can do more things on the fly like that.
How did I come about the singing? We did a gig; I think it was in Breckenridge, at the South Club. I would sit in with my dad and play drums and do a rap at the same time, while we were doing a funk song or a Rick James song or something like that.
EOTO is nothing if not prolific. The duo recently released their th live recording—which means a few thousand songs worth of original material. The Lotus Flower brings a visual stimulus to the sensory overload and adds another layer to the psychedlic onslaught that is EOTO. You can check out the interview below. It seems like you guys are always on the road.
Where are you now, and where are you heading next? Yes we are always on the road. Then the following week we do five different cities in Florida, then up to Connecticut and Portland, ME. So all over the place.
